Christian Science came into my life in 1938 in a most unusual...

Christian Science came into my life in 1938 in a most unusual way. One year prior to this when I was returning home from a northern state, I was urged to take a plane rather than a train. Soon after takeoff I became extremely fearful, having anxious thoughts for my two very young children, imagining their being without a mother's care should the plane crash. My fear became so intense that I began to feel strangely ill. I was having difficulty breathing, and my limbs were numb.

The stewardess called for one of the pilots, who very kindly came and sat with me. He spoke about his wife and children and told me of his excellent flying record of many years without accident. I was reassured and more calm but had to be helped off the plane at the airport, where my sisters awaited me. They took me immediately to an emergency hospital, where a nurse treated me while we were still in the car, as I could not walk. At home my physician came and diagnosed my condition as tetanus of the muscles.

After one year of medical treatment I had not improved. Normal noises and happenings seemed to unnerve me, and my condition worsened. I went with my husband to a resort, where I became so ill that a doctor was summoned. He sat at my bedside and inquired about the medical treatment I was having. He said, "What I am going to tell you is not very ethical, and don't tell anyone I told you, but why don't you try Christian Science?"
