Immunization and the Christian Scientist

Christian Scientists heartily accept Mary Baker Eddy's words in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures: "Great respect is due the motives and philanthropy of the higher class of physicians. We know that if they understood the Science of Mind-healing, and were in possession of the enlarged power it confers to benefit the race physically and spiritually, they would rejoice with us." Science and Health, p. 151;

Students of this Science hold in high regard all who, according to their lights, are working unselfishly for the health and well-being of mankind. This, however, does not mean that they agree with or utilize prophylactic or therapeutic methods contrary to the metaphysical system of healing that has proven so effective in their lives. Christian Scientists respect the rights of others to seek help where they believe it to be, but insofar as the law allows reserve the privilege to practice the art of metaphysical healing as illustrated in the life and works of Christ Jesus, and explained in this age in its Science by Mrs. Eddy. This demands on their part daily scientific prayer and Christian living for the protection of themselves and their families.

Much prayerful, persistent work over many years, buttressed by widespread proof of the efficacy of Christian Science, has earned the right to practice metaphysical healing without interference from government or medical authorities. This is a precious freedom, and earnest students of Science greatly value it. They are alert to claim and utilize to the full their legal rights; but on the other hand, they invariably obey the law when it demands conformity to quarantine and immunization regulations to protect the well-being of others.
