The day before school started one year, our two youngest children...

The day before school started one year, our two youngest children had ridden their bikes to the swimming pool for their last swim of the season. A short time later our youngest son called me on the phone telling me that our ten-year-old daughter had been hit by a car.

Immediately I called a Christian Science practitioner. When I arrived at the scene of the accident, the little girl had regained consciousness and was mentally and spiritually alert. The people were lined up beside her, shielding her from the hot West Texas sun. As I was singing one of our hymns to her, I realized there was nothing to indicate that she could not get up and leave. The people were very fearful, but I assured them that God could do anything. Our daughter and I walked to the car. The ambulance arrived, and the driver was much concerned because of a large bump on the child's forehead. The policeman told the driver that I was the mother, and the driver stopped insisting that she should be taken to the hospital. We truly felt the presence of our heavenly Father throughout this experience.

The ambulance driver later called my husband and told him that, based upon his experience, he felt the child had suffered a concussion. His diagnosis was reported to the practitioner, and within about thirty minutes the swelling on our daughter's forehead had completely subsided. We felt divinely sustained during the whole experience, and at no time did fear overcome me. Every time I looked at the child I could see the healing taking place.
