The Child: A Clean Page

Perhaps at no time in history has there been so much discussion of the actions of children and teen-agers. Picturing young people in general as thoughtless and irresponsible not only is rendering a disservice to them but is building up a mistaken concept that may be difficult to erase.

Doubtless, many of us have observed a young person who might have been classed as an individual least likely to succeed. Yet we have seen this youth advance in character-building and studies. He has succeeded in carving out quite a commendable niche for himself—much to the surprise of those who had mentally disqualified him.

We can better appreciate children when we recognize that they have a natural desire for the good and pure. They yearn to be loved, encouraged, appreciated, and praised in all right endeavors. One who has had any experience in rearing children knows that, through love, they will willingly do what they are reluctant to do through fear of punishment. Granted, children of today are more articulate than their ancestors, possibly because they have not been brought up under the stern edict that children should be seen, not heard.
