HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WRITE:

Are Discipline and Freedom Related?

Yes. One link between the two is strength. Discipline demands and expands our strength; so does realizing our true, unaffected freedom. I'm not using "strength" in its animal sense, "discipline" in its Spartan sense, or "freedom" in its libertine sense. I'm trying to use all these words in their highest, most spiritual, sense.

I'm thinking of strength as the humble, loving capability and willingness to adhere to divine Principle. This is at least a very large part of any act that in the light of Christian Science I would consider strong.

My idea of discipline involves making and meeting worthwhile demands on oneself. This takes—and gives—spiritual strength.
