ASCENDING STEPS

I was sure I knew what the Scriptures meant
when they bade me lay self-will aside.
All right, I said, I'm obedient.
I will do it Your way, Father. Please guide
me along in the path You see
(though it isn't the one I think it should be).

Nor do I condemn my feeble try,
that first attempt to walk His way.
It made me aware of His watchful eye
and paved the path for a later day
when I said, Dear God, I've come to know
You are always right in the way You show.

But still there was more I had to do.
And the loving pressure never stopped
until the time when at last I knew
all willful planning must be dropped.
Now the way is clear when I humbly see
I want what my Father wants for me.
