I am grateful for parents who taught me that God is Love and wholly good. I was brought up in a Protestant church, and I am thankful that it instilled in me a devout reverence for God, thus preparing me for the higher enlightenment of Christian Science.

During my junior year in high school I became ill and unable to attend classes. School authorities sent me to various doctors, none of whom were able to diagnose my condition. However, all of them agreed on one point—that I would never be well. At this time my mother had been a serious student of Christian Science for over a year. Her joy and inspiration were very apparent, but I could not understand what caused her to be so inspired.

Constant tiredness was one of the problems I labored with. One night I was unable to sleep and noticed that my heart had suddenly begun to function abnormally. I had some knowledge of the seriousness of heart disease and was filled with fear. I was in no pain, but extreme weakness prevented my calling for help. Two words seemed to illumine the darkness before me. These words were "Christian Science." I was enraptured with the healing power I saw in those words, and knew, "Christian Science can save my life."
