In Defense of Business
Business rightly conceived has a sound metaphysical basis and is under the protection and control of divine Principle. It is not just a humanly projected mode of operation for the benefit of the few or for the rich. It has a wide base of benefit, is very necessary for the support of society as a whole, and represents a divine idea of supply and sustenance. As in all human representations, it has been open to abuses and needs the discipline of spiritual motives and divine direction, but let no one castigate the fundamental idea of production and distribution involved in the business enterprise.
Business, as well as some other human organizations that represent high ideals, is under attack, and we can well take stock of the right way to handle this attack and preserve the good that our system of business expresses. There are destructive elements in society that have as their main purpose to tear down, to destroy. At present the home and the church are under pressure from this type of thinking, and it is evident that business, too, is feeling the heat of this attack. It is time to take a good look at the true idea of business and see how this idea reflects the creative cause of the universe and is motivated by the Love that meets human needs.
Early in the Bible record there came the command to "multiply, and replenish the earth." Gen. 1:28; There are many instances recorded in the Bible where those that were faithful to God's commands prospered and became affluent. There is nothing inherently wrong with abundance or with a just profit. When wrong motives get into the picture or egotism resulting from riches takes over, then there is just cause for complaint and for an overturning. But the ability to produce is still a divinely sustained faculty.
