Mrs. Eddy writes in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "He to whom 'the arm of the Lord' is revealed will believe our report, and rise into newness of life with regeneration" (p. 24).

What a joy it is to realize that those words have been made manifest in my own experience! It began during the Second World War when I found a Christian Science Sentinel in the jungle foothills of Burma—a proof that Truth can be found everywhere. In between periods of action I read the Sentinel with eagerness. I just knew that this was "pure religion and undefiled" (James 1:27). It was so clear and simple that I drank it in like pure water. Through the Sentinel "the arm of the Lord" (Isa. 53:1) was revealed to me. I did believe the report, and so my regeneration was started.

At this time I drank beer and spirits rather heavily and also smoked cigarettes, cigars, and a pipe. All of this I did quite naturally because I had been brought up in the licensing trade and so accepted it as a part of my life. The only knowledge I had of Christian Science was what I read in that Sentinel, but within a period of two or three weeks my soldier friends remarked to me that they had not seen me smoking or drinking. Yes! They told me. I had not even realized that the habits had left me. In this I saw the "newness of life," spoken of in the above quotation, rising within me. Very soon after this I was able to discontinue the wearing of glasses the Army had insisted I use for close work.
