Meeting Aggressive Evil

During times of hatred, greed, injustice, and fear that culminate in deeds of violence, students of Christian Science are reminded of Mrs. Eddy's vision with regard to present-day problems. She foresaw the changes that would occur in world thought and experience when material concepts would not hold up under the challenges of the times, and thought would reach out for something satisfying and abiding.

Mrs. Eddy outlines in Science and Health the specific works "those who discern Christian Science" will do during the battle between error and Truth. She writes: "During this final conflict, wicked minds will endeavor to find means by which to accomplish more evil; but those who discern Christian Science will hold crime in check. They will aid in the ejection of error. They will maintain law and order, and cheerfully await the certainty of ultimate perfection." Science and Health, pp. 96, 97; The words indicate not only the certainty that the work will be done but the certainty of its inevitable fruition.

At no time need we accept a sense of frustration or inadequacy in meeting the various aggressions of evil. However, the battle with evil must first be individually fought and won in thought. Because Christian Science translates things into thoughts, we deal with erroneous material beliefs rather than with persons and situations. Our awareness of the presence, power, and love of Spirit, God, and of man's at-one-ment with Him does act on the general world consciousness to clarify, unself, calm, and protect. Because such knowing is based on spiritual fact, it is a positive and dynamic influence for good. Let us never minimize the power of even one spiritual idea!
