Christian Science Church Center

PROGRESS REPORT No. 16

Hardworking computers will have office space in the new Church Center. They will operate twenty-four hours a day bringing the tremendous efficiency of modern electronic data processing to many activities of The Mother Church.

Routine and even certain complex tasks at headquarters can be simplified by electronic data processing. Examples are numerous. Inventory control for raw and finished products is one. The scheduling of maintenance work and the bulk mailing of millions of pieces of literature can also be expedited by computers. In every instance, however, the cost must justify the means. The complex subscription records of The Christian Science Publishing Society are now being put on computer files.

To obtain practical results, a self-sufficient electronic data processing installation must have the capacity to design and develop programs and then carry them out. The Electronic Data Processing Division of The Mother Church will have two sections: the Systems Design Section will prepare programs; the Computer Operations Section will operate them.
