What Are We Expecting?

Two young women of my acquaintance once visited a city in a foreign country at the same time. And both happened to attend a service in the same church. Back home one of them enthusiastically related what a wonderful experience she had had at the service. The people had been very kind to her; she was even offered a lift. The other had nothing good to say. She had not met with any kindness; nobody had even seemed to notice her.

Entirely different impressions! Isn't this very often the case? What people experience at school, at the office, or at a dancing party may greatly vary. One person finds life full of wonderful adventures; another, although living in more favorable conditions, may say that life is a dull or even tragic affair.

What is back of such different impressions? Is it fate or chance? Christian Science makes it clear that what we experience is the result of our consciousness. Our whole world is one of thought, that is, thoughts externalized. Mrs. Eddy says, "Hold thought steadfastly to the enduring, the good, and the true, and you will bring these into your experience proportionably to their occupancy of your thoughts." Science and Health, p. 261; This is a declaration based on divine law; it has nothing whatever to do with chance.
