We read in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures...

We read in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy (p. 66), "Spiritual development germinates not from seed sown in the soil of material hopes, but when these decay, Love propagates anew the higher joys of Spirit, which have no taint of earth." The truth of this statement has been proved to me gradually over the years.

My parents were somewhat surprised when, at the age of twenty-one, I asked them to make my Christmas present a copy of Science and Health. I had heard about Christian Science from a beloved aunt who had demonstrated the wonderful truths taught by it, and I had witnessed a demonstrated of the efficacy of this Science in a healing of cancer experienced by the father of a school friend of mine.

However, before I'd had a firm grounding in or gained a full grasp of Christian Science, I moved to another country on the continent of Africa where the life led was generally of a very much faster tempo than that in which I had been brought up, and I was soon caught up in a very material way of life. I was afraid of missing something and joined in social drinking and smoking and in having a good time generally—or, I should say, trying to, because the fast way of living never really brought me any happiness or satisfaction.
