One wintry day four years ago I had an accident as I was going out of my back door on an errand. The sharp corner of the stone step injured my chest, and I struck my head on the edge of the step and was rendered unconscious. Some time later when I came to and started to rise, I was surprised to find that I could not move and could not breathe without pain.

Being a Christian Scientist, I began to pray thus: "Dear heavenly Father, I had planned to go to help a dear one today, who needs me, but I certainly can't help anyone lying here. There's no one here, Father, but You and me, so I'll leave it with You to help me up."

Within a few minutes I felt my body relax and found I could arise and walk into the house. Suffering greatly, I lay down on the bed and began repeating the Lord's Prayer. At first it did not seem to mean a thing. Yet I kept right on saying it over and over again. Soon I remembered that I had been taught to take note that this prayer does not contain one single "I," "me," or "my." It is always "our" or "we" or "us." I realized then that I need not lie there on the bed praying for myself. I would spend this time praying for the whole wide world.
