Michaelsen, chairman of the Department of Religious Studies at the University of California's Santa Barbara branch, an ordained Methodist, a Yale Ph.D., and a man well in tune with the trend. Professor Michaelsen recalls "the dark ages" of the Depression when a clerical collar evoked "a polite or scornful yawn" and theology was regarded as "strictly anachronistic."
