The Uses of Discipline

Discipline can be interpreted positively or negatively depending upon one's response to its demands. The traffic regulation which seems restrictive may also be viewed as protection and freedom to proceed. If we "get with" the law we can use it to our advantage; but if we insist upon going contrary to it we shall have a frustrating experience.

It is thus with the law of God. When one begins to recognize the Science of being and to know something of the law of God that governs man, he can come into harmony with it and feel the control of this divine force working in his behalf. This requires discipline of thought and life. And when properly viewed, this discipline is completely positive in its effect. It never deprives one of anything good but rather opens his experience to all the possibilities of man in the likeness of God the expression of divine Principle.

The athlete undergoes discipline to excel in his activity; the student accepts discipline to learn and to prepare for his future; the musician, the artist, the metaphysician, all have the necessity to undergo discipline. There is no other road to excellence than to respond to the demands that are necessary to attain the desired end.
