A couple of days after a minor injury, which I had ignored, I...

A couple of days after a minor injury, which I had ignored, I found myself with a badly swollen leg, ankle, and foot. Later I noticed that my toes were turning black. In the course of my prayerful work in Christian Science I searched my consciousness and discovered that I had allowed myself to be deluded into believing that my experience could somehow consist in part of bones, flesh, and blood, and that these had the ability, in and of themselves, to act, to react, to become healthy or diseased. Is it any wonder that my experience was reflecting medical beliefs?

Habitually my thought turned to that powerful statement in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy (p. 468), "All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." This Science has shown me that the infinite, intelligent power which forms and maintains the universe is manifested in man's experience as the strength, vigor, and vitality of Spirit; as the purity and essence of Soul; as the law and order of Principle; as the spiritual existence of Life; as the awareness of Truth; as the intelligence, wisdom, and understanding of Mind; as the compassion and consideration of Love.

Coincident with my entertainment in consciousness of spiritual ideas, the healing came. The toes regained normal color, the inflammation subsided, and my foot, ankle, and leg became normal. But the healing was not instantaneous. It occurred only in proportion to the filling of my consciousness with spiritual ideas which displaced the limiting belief that bones, flesh, and blood had the ability to condition mankind. The healing, though delayed, confirmed what I had learned in Christian Science, namely, that the body has no alternative but to respond to the consciousness which controls it and that the power of God is irresistible.
