When a lump on my back had grown to such proportions that it was noticeable to others, I prayed for the truths to meet my need. These words found on page 462 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy helped to turn my thought to what I needed to do to bring about the healing: "Anatomy, when conceived of spiritually, is mental self-knowledge, and consists in the dissection of thoughts to discover their quality, quantity, and origin. Are thoughts divine or human? That is the important question. This branch of study is indispensable to the excision of error."

I was led to read an editorial in an issue of The Christian Science Journal. The editorial was on the subject of mental surgery, and it gave me the support and confidence I needed. I realized I had to rid my thought of all false beliefs about God and man and replace them with the consciousness of God's goodness and allness. I knew then and there that my healing had begun.

Many weeks passed in which I had to challenge my thoughts diligently, and gradually I became aware of a complete change in my thinking. Criticism was giving way to a more loving attitude toward everyone I saw. I started expressing gratitude for the good I was seeing in the experience of neighbors and friends.
