It was over forty years ago that I was introduced to Christian Science. I had been in and out of hospitals for two years. A neighbor recommended that my husband send me to a physician in a clinic in a large neighboring city across the border. After a thorough examination the doctor there told me he could not help me. He said that the condition of my heart was such that I should return home at once as I might pass on any time.

I went to my room in the boardinghouse, and to the best of my understanding I prayed. That evening a woman and her daughter, hearing my story, asked if they could read to me. I saw three books on the table; one I recognized as the Bible. The woman read from one of the other books, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God,—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Although I did not know it at the time, the book was Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the quotation is the first sentence in the chapter on Prayer. This quotation reminded me of my early religious training that God is almighty and that He can do all things. I felt happy; and I said to myself: "I don't have to die. God will heal me."

The next morning when I went out to have breakfast, I saw a sign, "Help Wanted." I started to work right away and worked all day for three weeks. Then I returned to my home on a farm in Saskatchewan. When my neighbor saw that I was healed, he asked about my doctor. I told him that a woman had read from a book and I was healed. He replied that he had this book. When he brought it over, it was a German translation of Science and Health. German was our language.
