Law versus Belief

This arresting statement is by Mrs. Eddy: "The point for each one to decide is, whether it is mortal mind or immortal Mind that is causative."  Science and Health, p. 195; Emphatic and uncompromising, the statement allows no one to take a halfway position on the subject but demands that each one decide what will be the influencing factor for himself—mortal mind or immortal Mind.

The real man, dwelling forever in the infinitude of Spirit, is not faced with deciding between two seeming causes. Spiritual man knows only one cause—God. To this man, the carnal, or mortal, mind has no existence, not even as suggestion or belief.

But the human being daily faces the apparent conflict between spiritual ideas and mortal illusions. These illusions can seem very attractive and clever. If the outcome of mortal beliefs was always immediately painful or unpleasant, we should have no hesitancy rejecting their suggestions. But it is part of the deceitful nature of mortal mind to masquerade under impressive titles such as "law" or "gratification." Sometimes we choose to honor and accept this posturing, thereby giving it reality.
