THE INWARD MAN

II Corinthians 4:16

Shadow of a man,
the outward man,
but the place of his fear
is a dark dark place,
twisting tunnels
where no men live,
a dark, dark place
where no sound is
save the tattered,
rattling songs of death.

Away, away, away
toward the light
through the fearless night
in a separate place
stands the inward man
no men can see
and I am he.

A free man—
free as a lion,
freer than a lark,
none so free
as the inward man
that none can see.

Behold the inward man!
See him everywhere,
ruling the inward world ;
reflecting the light
of an inward sun
hidden from the outward one.

There is a lion in the heart
of the inward man
and an eagle in his eyes,
and the deeper the lion roars,
the higher the eagle flies.

The inward man flies far,
hungering for the morning star.
