The Christian Scientist in Combat

A professor of theology in a Protestant seminary once told his class that prayer for safety in time of war was meaningless. "If men on both sides are praying for protection or victory, whose request is God to grant?" he asked. Men involved in battle are sometimes heard to say, "If there is a God, why does He let warfare go on?"

The disillusionment here expressed is characteristic of the illogical belief in a personal, anthropomorphic God, cognizant of both good and evil. To a disillusioned world, absorbed in materialism and conflict, Christian Science comes as a shaft of light. It teaches that God does not create or permit evil; His work is entirely good. In the words of Mrs. Eddy, "Science reveals the possibility of achieving all good, and sets mortals at work to discover what God has already done."  Science and Health, p. 260; Within this infinite good, which Science reveals the possibility of achieving, is perfect safety.

How does Science show us what God has already done about safety? By teaching us basic laws of existence, laws governing the relationship of God and man, laws of the kingdom of God. Christian Science points out that danger and disaster result from the failure of men to recognize these laws and to live in obedience to them but that safety results for individuals who live in accord with these laws.
