"Light in their dwellings"

When Moses was led to send a series of plagues on Egypt in order to force Pharaoh to let the Israelites leave the land of bondage, the next to the final plague was darkness. We read in Exodus (10:22), "There was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days." But we find a little farther on that "the children of Israel had light in their dwellings."

The recent blackout in the northeastern area of the United States gave one an inkling of what continued darkness would be like. Light is a marvelous blessing; without it human beings would be imprisoned by the dark, aware only of what they could cognize through physical contact, or perhaps through vibration. Daylight is a blessing; it extends visual awareness millions of times.

Artificial light is a blessing too. It prolongs useful hours and brings freedom to identify objects and to move about safely. But spiritual light, the light of Christ, Truth, is the most powerful light of all. The Israelites, turning to God to lead them out of slavery, were conscious of this light. Spiritually-minded people feel the tangible presence of divine light and through it are able to extend their awareness of God and His heaven.
