One day in 1963 I became ill...
One day in 1963 I became ill with the symptoms of a form of influenza which was prevalent at that time. The illness was most noticeable in my voice and was quickly observed by my fellow schoolteachers.
I called a practitioner that evening after school. While talking with her on the telephone, I had a coughing spell and lost my voice. The practitioner gave no evidence of hearing the error as she quickly turned my thought completely away from the body with the utmost compassion and without condemnation. This tender compassion was the transforming power which wrought my healing, even as it wrought healings in Jesus' time (Matt. 14:14), "Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick."
My healing took place during the next fifteen minutes, as I listened intently to the practitioner's voice speaking with authority and declaring the truth which lifted my thought to the allness of Principle, in which mesmerism cannot operate, since there is no mortal to carry out the delusions of personal sense. This steady flow of truth from divine Principle, healing me and assuring me of my actual exemption and freedom from discord as God's perfect reflection, soon broke the mesmerism. Error no longer had a leg to stand on, so it was heard no more. That was the last coughing spell.
