Letters to the Press from Christian Science Committees on Publication

I appreciate that [the author of a recent article], in touching on Christian Science, obtained her information from The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts. She seems, however, to have assumed that Christian Science practitioners are "faith healers." This is somewhat misleading.

The first sentence in the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures'' by Mary Baker Eddy, reads, "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God—a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love" (p. 1).

From this, it is abundantly clear that, although faith is requisite in healing through prayer, much else is required. Faith can accomplish but little without some understanding of the ever-operative laws of God applicable to healing. The lack of "unselfed love" (itself never easy of attainment) can readily be seen as a bar to healing, even when the one aspiring to heal may possess much faith and understanding.
