Some years after the Second...
Some years after the Second World War, when society was still disorganized, my father, animated with great Christian charity, took under the family roof a man who, because of paralysis of both legs, could not earn a living and thus meet his needs. After a lapse of time, my mother, who used to take the man's meals to his room, was puzzled to see laid out on his bed two big books and a very small one, the pages of which were being referred to in turn.
The man confided that a neighbor, a Swiss, had introduced him to a religion called Christian Science, which, he said, healed all ailments by spiritual means. The books he was using were the Bible, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and the Quarterly.
At this period I was often subject to heart trouble; and since my grandfather had passed on with this trouble, great fears were being voiced about my condition. A specialist whom I consulted declared that I should cease all athletic activity.
