I have a deep sense of gratitude for Christian Science and the comfort of its teachings. My husband passed on during the Second World War. Immediately a message of assurance came to me from "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. On page 386 she writes, "A blundering despatch, mistakenly announcing the death of a friend, occasions the same grief that the friend's real death would bring." And she continues (pp. 386, 387): "If a Christian Scientist had said, while you were laboring under the influence of the belief of grief, 'Your sorrow is without cause,' you would not have understood him, although the correctness of the assertion might afterwards be proved to you. So, when our friends pass from our sight and we lament, that lamentation is needless and causeless. We shall perceive this to be true when we grow into the understanding of Life, and know that there is no death." Also with this message came the declaration (ibid., p. 380), "Truth is always the victor." This quotation was sent to me from three different sources.

At that time I did not grasp the full import of these two messages, but when my mother passed on later, these truths had become so firmly established in my thought that I had no sense of death or separation from her.

Also during the war I suddenly became ill with pneumonia. In the most wonderful way matters were taken out of my hands, and within twenty-four hours it was arranged for me to go into a Christian Science House in London. For several days I was in a critical condition; but through treatment given by a practitioner and supported by the very loving care of the nurses, I was healed.
