Christian Science came to my...

Christian Science came to my family as a result of prayer. On page 1 of Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy writes, "Desire is prayer." My husband and I had a deep desire to understand God and man; but after many years of intermittent attendance at churches of various denominations, we had failed to find a satisfactory answer and so had given up church attendance altogether.

After our children began school, we saw that spiritual education was necessary to a harmonious existence. We could not, however, ask our children to attend Sunday School when we would not attend church. We endeavored to live the Golden Rule, and this, coupled with a desire to give an understanding of God to our children, undoubtedly brought us the answer to our prayers in the form of books given to us by a neighbor. These awakened in us a higher concept of church. Our neighbor was not a Christian Scientist, but the books had been left with her to dispose of, and, at our request, she gave them to us.

I was at this time ill with a kidney condition and chronic backache; and a physical examination by a specialist had revealed a tumor which had enlarged the affected organ to double its normal size. I had been asked to return in six weeks to determine how progressive the condition was, but no medication was to be taken during this time.
