When I was about twelve years...
When I was about twelve years old, my parents took up the study of Christian Science. I was impressed by my stepfather's subsequent healing of hereditary asthma, from which he had suffered all his life. My mother had come from New Hampshire, where I was born, to California, hoping to rear me in this state, for the doctor had told her that I would never live to grow up.
My parents made no attempt to interest me in Christian Science, although they began to attend a branch church. I was permitted to continue my attendance at the orthodox church of which I was already a member.
But one day, when I was thirteen, I picked up Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy and started to read. I suddenly decided to enroll in the Christian Science Sunday School to see if I could get answers to questions that I couldn't get at my former Sunday School. Needless to say, I got my answers and remained in the Christian Science Sunday School until the age of twenty, Three years later I joined The Mother Church and a branch Church of Christ, Scientist, and have been an active worker in the church ever since.
