"All things are possible"

In beginning her chapter on Prayer in Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy sets forth a prerequisite for the understanding and demonstration of Christian Science. She says (p. 1), "The prayer that reforms the sinner and heals the sick is an absolute faith that all things are possible to God, —a spiritual understanding of Him, an unselfed love." Before one begins to pray to overcome sin or to heal a disease, one must establish firmly in consciousness the fact that God, Spirit, is present and has the power to do what needs to be done.

In Christian Science we learn that sin and disease are hypnotic effects produced by the carnal, or mortal, mind. They are illusions; therefore they can be destroyed.

Christ Jesus appeared on earth in a manner still thought to be impossible by many. He was born of a virgin. His wisdom and his works were thought then, and are thought by many today, to be impossible. He healed the sick and raised the dead without using material methods; he multiplied food to feed multitudes; he walked on the water: he stilled the storm; he raised himself from the tomb; and he ascended before the eyes of the disciples. When he was asked who could be saved, he said (Matt. 19:26), "With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible."
