I heard of and accepted Christian Science...

I heard of and accepted Christian Science as the truth many years ago; but until 1939 I just dabbled in it, using it to a great extent to give me greater material comfort. I loved it and sought it, but ignored these words of our Leader in the textbook, Science and Health (p. 10): "Seeking is not sufficient. It is striving that enables us to enter."

In 1939 I had an operation for gallstones, which was considered imperative by the medical faculty. Only at first did I seem to be benefited by this operation, and finally the medical verdict was that I would have to diet, take medicine regularly, and lead somewhat the life of a semi-invalid. This brought me to the necessity of striving to enter into the understanding of God, of my real being, and of Christian Science. My gratitude goes out to the practitioner who stood by me to help to establish my health.

My healing came slowly, and I am grateful for the opportunity for study which this gave me, because with physical comfort I might have ceased to strive to purify my thinking, which is a fundamental process in Christian Science healing. It is the only progress worth making and infinitely unfolds. It throws upon our human sense of life a truer reflection of reality, which is evidenced, according to our understanding and purification of thought, in joy, peace, harmony, and health coming into our experience.
