For a number of years I...
For a number of years I suffered from diseased lungs. One lung had completely gone, and the other was only half functioning owing to severe and constant hemorrhaging. The medical profession had recorded the condition as incurable and had given me at the most three months to live.
At this point my father was taken seriously ill with spinal paralysis. He was told he would never walk again and would become completely helpless. A friend of his asked me to read the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy, and this I agreed to do in order to help my father, whom I loved very dearly.
For many days and nights I read this book; in fact, it was always in my hands, but I never once connected this reading with my own illness. I had not previously heard of Christian Science, of Mrs. Eddy, or of Christian Science practitioners. We were members of an orthodox church and were very happy with our religion.
