Down through the ages men have desired to hear God's voice. Some have listened, heard, and profited. Oftentimes they have been saved from dire situations through the guidance of the divine voice. Whittier must have had this profound experience to have written in a poem adapted for the Christian Science Hymnal (No. 238),
