RADIO PROGRAM No. 142 - What Shall I Tell My Child About Christmas?
INTERVIEWER: Now that the Christmas season is here, I wonder how many parents would like Christmas to mean more to their children than just decorating the Christmas tree or opening presents? So often it seems that any deeper meaning gets lost in the rush. Many times children ask questions about Christmas that really never get answered.
I would be interested to know how you as a Christian Scientist answer some of the questions children ask. Take this one, for example: What is so important about Christmas? SPEAKER: Well, the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem was the beginning of the most wonderful career that has ever taken place in the history of men. The coming of the baby Jesus is described beautifully in the second chapter of Luke (8-14): "And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them. Fear not: for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you: Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saving, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."
Just think what Christ Jesus brought to men throughout the world: he established Christianity; he brought the true meaning of brotherly love: he established proof of the presence and power of God!
