When our daughter was two...

When our daughter was two and a half years old and still did not walk properly, I took her to a doctor for advice. After a careful examination the doctor thought there was something definitely wrong with her hips and requested that the child be X-rayed. After examining the pictures, a specialist said that she had been born with dislocated hips and that unless she was put into plaster right away, a process which they hoped would prove effective, she would, they feared, be crippled for life.

A dear neighbor of ours, who was a Christian Scientist, heard of our plight and told me that Christian Science could heal our daughter. Although I listened very carefully to all she told me and accepted a copy of the Sentinel, from which I gained much comfort, my husband felt that nothing could help our daughter but medical treatment. So she was admitted to hospital and put into plaster. She lay in plaster for twelve months, coming home for periods and going back and forth to the hospital for changes of plaster and X-ray pictures.

After twelve months the specialist called me to the hospital and said that the treatment had not been effective. He asked my husband and me to agree to surgery, warning us that it might mean two or three operations. Otherwise, he said, there was nothing more they could do for the child.
