Brought up in an average Christian...

Brought up in an average Christian home, attending Sunday School regularly, and later becoming a member of various churches at different times, I found no satisfactory answers to my questions about life and its prospects, about a real reason for being, about the short span of human existence, and about death. When I attended a Christian Science lecture for the first time, it was such a wonderful experience to me that it can hardly be described. I knew the lecturer presented what I had been seeking, the answer to my prayers, even though I had not known how to pray.

The next day found me in the local Christian Science Reading Room, where a copy of Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy was kindly lent me. The following Sunday I attended a Christian Science church service for the first time and felt as the prodigal son must have felt when he came home (see Luke 15). I withdrew from membership in the church to which I currently belonged.

There was no thought of healing at that time, so accustomed had I become to putting up with ailments and using material remedies. For many months I studied the Bible with Science and Health every moment I could, sometimes far into the night, for I was a busy housewife with two small children.
