I have always been grateful to the young man who presented Christian Science to me. He knew my physical condition and asked me if I would try Science. I said I should be willing to try anything that could help me.

In 1917 I had applied for a small insurance policy and was turned down because I did not pass the physical examination. In 1918 I was rejected for service in the Armed Forces because of my condition. It was at this point that I felt I had reached man's extremity. I had been under the care of doctors for twenty-six years for asthma and weak lungs, and they wanted to send me to a tuberculosis sanatorium.

It was at this time that the young man spoke to me of trying Christian Science. He told me to visit a practitioner. I did and told her of my physical problems. I also told her that the first healings I should like to have were those of the smoking habit and the drinking habit, which I had acquired from taking liquor in small doses from early childhood to help relieve the asthma. I felt that if I could be healed of these habits, the physical conditions would be much easier to heal. The practitioner treated me through prayer, and I studied the textbook by Mrs. Eddy.
