When Christian Science was...
When Christian Science was very new to me, I awakened one morning with a severe pain in my abdomen. Still in bondage to my old habits of thought and action, I immediately made an appointment with our family physician, who examined me that same day. He told me that I had an infected gland which had affected my abdomen and that surgery was required. He promptly made arrangements for my admittance into a hospital on the coming Saturday, gave me an injection, and sent me home.
At home I felt both fear and despondency, which prompted me to pray; and as I did, my thought turned to my newly purchased copy of the textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I had read just enough to know that if what I had read was the truth, I would not need that operation.
I decided to call a practitioner, and she advised me what to study in Science and Health and said that she would begin work for me immediately. So I embarked on my first experience in Christian Science.
