The Need for Science and Health

Occasionally someone asks why Christian Scientists need the Christian Science textbook, "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mrs. Eddy, to help them understand the Bible. "Why not take the Bible as it is?" one might add. The answer is that Scientists do take the Bible as it is—in its spiritual meaning. It is in a spiritual interpretation of the Bible that the divine Science of this great book is found.

Mrs. Eddy writes in "No and Yes" (p. 33): "If the Bible and my work Science and Health had their rightful place in schools of learning, they would revolutionize the world by advancing the kingdom of Christ. It requires sacrifice, struggle, prayer, and watchfulness to understand and demonstrate what these volumes teach, because they involve divine Science, with fixed Principle, a given rule, and unmistakable proof."

The Master, Christ Jesus, defined eternal life, saying, "This is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent" (John 17:3). Anyone who will search the Scriptures in the light that Science and Health throws upon them will begin to understand and demonstrate the life which is eternal. And in doing so he will "heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils" (Matt. 10:8).
