An Outlook for Thanksgiving

One of my earliest recollections is that of attending a church service with my parents in which members of the congregation, one after the other, expressed gratitude that overflowed into tears. It was Thanksgiving Day in a Christian Science church. I do not remember a single word spoken on that day. But the fact that Christian Science had changed the lives of many from earthly doom to heavenly freedom was impressed upon me in a way I could never forget.

Every Christian Scientist has much to be grateful for. But his gratitude is expressed not merely in feasting or merriment; nor is it born of a remembrance of material good alone. Rather, it is the effect of remembering the source of all good. This source is God, the divine Principle of being, infinite Mind, ever-present Love, omnipotent Truth, eternal Life. God is Father-Mother and man is His child.

It is the nature of God to care for His own, and when there seems to be a distortion of reality—an error that binds human beings with sin, disease, and the fear of death—God provides the means for escape from error, for freedom from sin, for health, for assurance of immortality. As John said, "We love him, because he first loved us" (I John 4:19).
