The study of Christian Science...
The study of Christian Science and the application of it to daily living have completely reversed my outlook on life. Before beginning to study Science I had a very materialistic outlook and only that which was subject to the proof of the physical senses had any meaning or reality for me. When Science was first brought to my attention it was so foreign to my established beliefs that I dismissed it as utter nonsense.
However, at that time my wife was beginning an earnest study of it, and the religion kept knocking at the door of my consciousness. I would occasionally glance at the literature my wife was reading, but inevitably I came across some statement which was so contrary to my way of thinking that I would instinctively draw back from what I had read and turn away again.
Meanwhile, my wife kept up her study, and in not too long a time found relief from, and then a bit later had a complete healing of, a severe nasal disturbance that had troubled her since childhood. I remembered all the medical advice she had previously sought and the remedies she had been given for the condition, and her complete healing through the application of Christian Science was such a positive fact to my physical senses that I was forced to recognize that prayer had healed her.
It was the proof I needed to make me realize that the physical senses were not the bedrock of reality I had thought them to be. I finally had to admit that there was a power greater than that which met the eye, an unseen power, of whose existence I had previously been completely unaware.
After that admission to myself I did an about-face and began an earnest study of Christian Science. Admittedly there were times when doubt tried to force its way into my thinking, but I had only to recall my wife's wonderful healing to eliminate the momentary doubt. A whole new concept of Life and of living opened up to me as I turned from materialistic thinking to the spiritual truths of being, as revealed in Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy.
Within a short time I was admitted to membership in The Mother Church, and about a year later I joined the branch church of which my wife was a member. This step was soon followed by the inspiring experience of class instruction for both of us.
Through the understanding of Christian Science, I have had healings of smoking and drinking and of colds, which I used to have frequently. In a severe automobile accident all the people involved were protected from injury, and the wrecked automobile was replaced at no monetary loss. Problems of employment, supply, and housing have also been promptly and adequately solved. Of late, I have experienced a truly remarkable increase of tireless energy and activity through the realization that Mind is the true source of energy and activity.
But above and beyond all these healings have been the spiritual rebirth and regeneration I have experienced. From having a fearful, reticent, somewhat brooding and introspective attitude, I have come to know the vital, joyous, confident, and outgoing feeling that comes to those who understand the true source of their being to be the one perfect Mind, which is God. That understanding is a source of infinite strength and boundless activity.
Truly, one must express deep gratitude to God for such a great change in one's life. I also give deep and sincere thanks to my wife for her loving and understanding help over the years, to my teacher for the great benefits of class instruction, to the dedicated Christian Science practitioners who have patiently helped me, to the many sincere and earnest fellow students who many times, and often unknowingly, have provided helpful enlightenment. And I have a special sense of gratitude for the whole structure of the Christian Science movement, so firmly and lovingly established by our Leader, Mrs. Eddy.—Charles E. Haydon, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.
