Purity Is Essential to Happiness

Emphasizing the importance of purity, Christ Jesus said (Luke 11:34, 35): "The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness. Take heed therefore that the light which is in thee be not darkness." When we succumb to the illusion that there are two powers, one material and the other spiritual, we are denying the allness of God, divine Mind. Purity involves only spiritual ideas and ideals.

Mrs. Eddy realized the necessity of maintaining purity of thought. One of the tenets of Christian Science reads (Science and Health, p. 497), "And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure." If we are always alert to the fact that the divine Mind is the only Mind and that man is the expression of this Mind, then we shall see ourselves and others in the correct light, as God's perfect children. More than anything else the youth of today need this understanding of God and of man as His reflection.

Purity should earnestly be sought and made one's own. In order to protect himself from sin, sickness, and all forms of sensualism, the Christian Scientist should know something of the workings of mortal mind, and then, through the knowledge that nothing can exist outside the realm of pure Mind, he should begin to destroy the carnal mind's mesmeric suggestions.
