Early in 1955 a skin rash broke out and eventually covered my body. Even as I prayed each day to know the nothingness of matter, I became more and more mesmerized by the irritation. I had treatment from practitioners at different times but finally decided that I would continue the prayerful work myself, thinking that perhaps that was my need. At the time I was serving as clerk of a branch church, and I did not miss a day at my desk. Many days I would go from my work to a Christian Science Reading Room and then go home and go to bed, because it was uncomfortable to keep my clothes on.

During this time our daughter, who always helps lovingly about the house, was in Europe; so I had the whole care of the home, and plans had been made many months ahead for relatives, whom we had not seen for seventeen years, to visit us. The day they were to arrive I was baking a cake, and I was feeling so miserable physically that I did not know how I was going to go through with it.

I started praying for the spiritual truth that would carry me through, and these words suddenly came to me: "Divine Love always has met and always will meet every human need" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, p. 494). I realized that I needed to know more of divine Love, and many beautiful truths came to me. Before I knew it, the cake was ready for the oven. I was lifted out of fear and was freer than I had been for a long time. I had proved in a measure the power of divine Love, and the cake was the best I had ever produced.
