A Timely Warning

The teachings of Christ Jesus fit every age. For instance, he said (Matt. 10:28), "Fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell." This warning is timely, and the people of today need to heed it. A greater danger than that of nuclear war confronts them. This is the danger of moral rottenness that would break down the strong fiber of social decency which Christianity has been building up for ages past.

Commenting on the words of Jesus quoted above, Mary Baker Eddy says (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 196). "The command was a warning to beware, not of Rome, Satan, nor of God, but of sin." And sin, according to Christian Science, is the carnal, or mortal mind, the supposed mind which produces a finite creation and a mortal man controlled perversely by selfishness and sensuality.

Moses gave the world the Ten Commandments, which forbid the ten basic sins, or contradictions of reality. Obedience to the Commandments brings the human self into conformity with spiritual man, the true self, which is God's image; hence obedience to moral law cannot be ignored if people are to awaken out of the precarious sense of life in matter into the security of indestructible existence in Spirit.
