Many years ago, through my...

Many years ago, through my mother's receptivity to Truth, Christian Science was brought into my life, and with gratitude for all the blessings that followed I should like to share one healing experience.

For about five years I had been following a dancing career and most of that time I suffered from sciatica. Although I considered myself a Christian Scientist, I did very little studying, and my church attendance was irregular. When the condition seemed especially severe I would call a Christian Science practitioner, and I always received help enough from the prayerful work done for me to see me through necessary rehearsals and performances; but the healing was not complete.

After my marriage I no longer pursued my career; so I had much time for thought. I decided to write to the last Sunday School teacher I had had. She was a practitioner, and through her loving and constant help my thought was awakened to the realization that in order to gain the healing, I myself had to put forth some effort instead of just relying on the work of practitioners. On page 233 of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures," after saying that it is necessary for us to provide proofs of Christian power by destroying sin, sickness, and death, Mary Baker Eddy writes, "This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil."
