I felt the presence of the Christ,...
I felt the presence of the Christ, unseen but calm and serene, in the friendship and in the home of a school friend. It was in his home that I first saw a copy of "Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" by Mary Baker Eddy. I instinctively knew that its contents based the influence I felt and the qualities of thought I perceived in the home. The family were devoted Christian Scientists.
A few years later when as a member of an Aero Squadron I was confronted with the dangers of the First World War, I purchased a copy of the book. Soon after I became afflicted with what was medically diagnosed as acute arthritis, which completely immobilized my legs.
Being committed to the hospital, I had my newly purchased copy of Science and Health brought to me. The association of this textbook with the calm, clear atmosphere I had sensed so strongly in the home of my friend gave me courage and dispelled all fear of the condition, which the doctors considered incurable. They repeatedly asked me if I had advised my family of the nature of my illness. This I had not done, because I had complete trust in God's healing power.
