Church Dedications
Note: Christian Science churches are dedicated only when free from debt.
Decatur, Georgia (First Church).
First Church of Christ, Scientist, Decatur, Georgia, will hold dedication services at 11 a.m., 3.30 and 7.30 p.m. on Sunday, November 29.
In February, 1929, a small group of Christian Scientists organized a Christian Science Society in Decatur. It was recognized by The Mother Church, The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Massachusetts, in August of that year.
A small auditorium was rented at 202 Trinity Place which had just been vacated by the local Episcopal church. It was used until it was sold in January, 1936. At that time the society moved to a hall on the mezzanine floor of the Decatur Federal Savings and Loan Building at the corner of Sycamore and McDonough Streets. ...
The society's change of title to First Church of Christ, Scientist, Decatur, was recognized by The Mother Church in October, 1937. ...
By January, 1947, it became necessary to rent separate space at the Decatur Recreational Center on Sycamore Street for the Sunday School. Its exercises were conducted there until the church purchased their present property at 446 Clairmont Avenue.
Enthusiasm for a church home of their own had been growing within the membership. Lots were first purchased on West Ponce de Leon Avenue at Water Street and were later sold when a more desirable location was available. In April, 1948, the residence at 446 Clairmont Avenue was purchased to be remodeled. The building was ready for church services by March 1, 1949. Another building on the property, with a minimum of alterations, provided for the needs of the Sunday School.
The Church purchased an adjoining lot on September 1, 1953. The church auditorium was enlarged in April, 1954, by taking in the study area of the Reading Room, which was moved to an uptown location. The floor area of the Sunday School was slightly more than doubled during April and May, 1955.
The public is cordially invited to attend the dedication services.—The DeKalb New Era (November 26, 1959).
