When I was still in my teens my older sister and I were forced to take over the financial responsibility for our family at the sudden passing on of my father. In a short time this sister married and moved away. The responsibility of supplying the needs of the family weighed heavily on me, and I succumbed to a feeling of resentment.

Later a painful physical condition manifested itself, and I was led to take up the study of Christian Science. As I began to gain peace through my study the physical condition was healed. And although it was not until some years later, I finally lost my feeling of resentment and gained a great sense of freedom and joy. I could see that the resentment had had no cause, even to human sense, because the acceptance of the responsibility had been my own choice, actuated by my sense of right.

I began my study of Science by reading Science and Health by Mrs. Eddy from beginning to end. My thought was sharply arrested by two passages. The first reads (p. 142): "Which was first, Mind or medicine? If Mind was first and self-existent, then Mind, not matter, must have been the first medicine." The second is on page 143, "If Mind was first chronologically, is first potentially, and must be first eternally, then give to Mind the glory, honor, dominion, and power everlastingly due its holy name."
