Signs of the Times

The Reverend Harold Blake Walker
in the "Living Faith" column of the Chicago Daily Tribune
Chicago, Illinois

Maybe we are beginning to seek the available God now. I am not sure, but I think there are signs abroad that we are feeling our need for God more keenly than for some time past. War and cold war have made us see what men can be and do and left us conscious of our spiritual need if we would be the men and women God meant us to be.

Those who have dared to think have come to understand that life will take on a deeper tone or else go down in the storm, It isn't enough to wander casually on the edges of religion.... Faith is more than sentimental. It is essentially faithfulness, the commitment of life to One in Whom we believe. It is a costly affair, involving loyalty and sacrifice on the altars of God's Kingdom.
