Originality

"Originality and spontaneity go hand in hand with enthusiasm and spiritual inspiration"

Originality is a quality prized by the majority of educated people, especially by writers, artists, composers, and inventors. Christian Scientists are original thinkers because they are learning to break away from time-worn beliefs and to turn to God, the source of all true ideas. This they do, even though the traditional beliefs they abandon are held by respected members of the medical, scientific, or theological professions.

Contributors to the Christian Science periodicals are urged to cultivate originality and freshness of expression in presenting the message of Christian Science and to avoid overworked figures of speech. However, originality does not imply straying ever so slightly from absolute Christian Science.

The basis of originality of expression is originality of thought. Mrs. Eddy worked long and earnestly to find just the right word to express her thought. Her vocabulary was unusually large; her modes of expression were original, varied, fresh, vital. She proved that to be truly original is to think independently of mortal influences, to follow untrod paths, always looking to God for ideas.
